Mount Meru Trek
Fifty miles (80 km) west of Mount Kilimanjaro lies an often overlooked, but spectacular volcano Mount Meru is 14,980 feet (4,565 meters) high and serves as a great warm-up before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro at 19,341 feet (5,895 meters) high. The Hike & Trek of Mount Meru is done as a warm-up and acclimatization and a great way to prepare for your Hike and Trek for Mount Kilimanjaro, unspoiled and less congested as compared to its sister mountain Mount Kilimanjaro counterparts. In fact, it is ideal for altitude acclimatization and you may elect to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with a lower number of days after climbing Meru. On the mountain, there is a good chance of seeing wildlife, and the crowds that can plague Kilimanjaro are non-existent here. Mount Meru 4,565m (14,977 feet) above sea level is the second-highest Mountain in Tanzania and among the World’s freestanding landmarks. A trek to the summit involves hiking through the forest and grassland on the lower slopes, followed by a dramatic walk along the rim of the Crater.
Although Mount Meru is less popular than Mount Kilimanjaro, it has some distinct advantages. The mountain is more scenic and spectacular, and you are much less likely to suffer altitude sickness on 4,565-metre-high than on 5,895m Kilimanjaro. In fact, Mount Meru makes an ideal high–altitude acclimatization warm-up climb before tackling Kilimanjaro. It is also one of Africa’s most beautiful volcanoes and is the fifth highest in Africa. Also, the best thing about climbing Mount Meru is the chance of a phenomenal view of Mount Kilimanjaro, the prospect of exploring and discovering adds to the thrill because of the adventurous spirit. This defines Mount Meru as one of our local mountain mythology and is the misfortune of a geographic feature that by any standard is a big mountain. At 14,976 feet it 6 compares neither in stature nor reputation to Kilimanjaro, and so is sharply overshadowed. However, Mount Meru is a unique feature in its own right, and very much worth the effort to climb.

The Momella route is the only route up Meru Mountain. Mount Meru climbing expedition is a great way to prepare you for Kilimanjaro Mountain climbing. Momella route has two large, well-maintained bunkhouses on the main route up the mountain conveniently spaced for a 4-day trek. You can also camp near the huts in case there is a large group of trekkers on the mountain at the same time as you, the huts may be full and you might have to camp.
